The
scholarship is named after Betty Loughhead MBE, JP. the first New Zealander to hold the
position of International President, 1983-85. The Soroptimists of New Zealand set up the
Scholarship with "The Deed" being signed by the first Trustees in 1987. A
campaign to obtain funding was started and through the goodwill of the Members the first
scholarships were presented in 1989. Charitable Trust status was obtained. The Scholarship
is offered annually.
