Degree in Landscape Architecture employed by the City Council. The Soroptimist International Club of Christchurch and Christine co-ordinated on a waterways enhancement project along an area of the Heathcote River.

Deborah Lawson LLB 2002         

         
Deborah's passion is advocacy for children and young people.
She has been a solicitor for Youth Law, NZ Community Law Centre and a full time research fellow for the Law Faculty, University of Otago.
Deborah is completing a PhD in Law

 

Nikki Ishida

Nikki is a mother and part time student at University of Otago
Nikki is studying full time to complete a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing, Accounting and Japanese.

Deborah and Nikki were presented with the certificate and cheque by members of Soroptimist International of Gore

 

 

Vivian Rodriquez

Emigrated to New Zealand from Costa Rica. Her first language is Spanish.
Vivian is a NZ Citizen and cares for her two children
Over 9 years Vivian has learned English and Italian and obtained a BA in History and Anthropology 2002. Honours in History 2004. This year she aims with the help of the scholarship to complete her MA thesis in History at Victoria University.
Her passionate belief is that education and hard work is the way out of poverty which she remembers well as a child and teenager in Costa Rica.

Susan Maxwell
Has a BA in Classical Studies and Italian completed in 2004.
Susan decided on a change of career on her return to NZ and is in her 2nd year of full time study towards a bachelor of Midwifery at the Massey University Campus in Wellington. She works part-time for a breast surgeon and has been a volunteer with the Wellington Refugee and Migrant Service.

Vivian and Susan were presented with the certificate and cheque by the members of Soroptimist International Club of Wellington in February 2007

Karen Gilby
is studying part time towards a Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Leadership at Waikato University. Karen teaches at a college in Tauranga and is a wife and mother of two young children. The Diploma is a prerequisite qualification for entry into a masters in Educational Leadership
 

 

Sarah Philips
is studying Medicine at Otago University. She completed her Bachelor of Science in 2004 with high grades which gave her entry into second year Medicine 2008. Her goal is to work towards helping to improve the NZ Health system. Sarah has represented NZ in Athletics.  SI Gore presented Sarah with her scholarship.
Teresa Foster and Leigh Ellis
are both studying for a Bachelor of Business Innovation and Enterprise at Christchurch  Polytechnic Institute of Technology .  Both are looking for career changes from the Social Services where they have worked for many years. Teresa has a young child and Leigh has 2 young children . They are their caregivers. Teresa and Leigh were presented their checques by Betty Loughhead- Turland at the Christchurch Soroptimist International Club. They felt very privileged to be a BLSST recipient and honoured to meet Betty.

2008 Recipients sharing $10,000.  

Nicole Craig: is studying for a Bachelor of Business Studies with a double major in Human Resource and Communications Management at Massey University in Auckland.  Nicole, on becoming a solo mother of four decided she needed further education to support herself and her children.  She has been a long term volunteer for St Johns Ambulance on the North Shore  Nicole joined SI North Shore for their dinner meeting where the presentation of her award was made. Donna Kuljish: is a second year nursing student from Northland.  Donna is now completing her nursing qualification and realising her dream.  Donna has raised four children working part time and looking after extended family.  Her ambition is to be a qualified nurse helping particularly in the Maori population of Northland.  Her community is one hours drive from any Medical centre.  To complete her studies she also has to drive to Whangarei which is some distance from her home.  She was excited to receive her scholarship and was keen to travel the long distance to SI North Shore, Auckland to be  presented but was unable to do so because of a family member’s ill health. 

Maria Polak : is studying a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Biomedical Science in Nutrition at the University of Otago. Her plan is to work with women who have psychological problems with food and nutrition. Maria has 3 children in her care. She migrated to New Zealand but was unable to find work in Translation which she had done previously.  SI  Gore was presenting  Maria with her scholarship.

 


Previous Recipients have studied in many subjects such as:

  • LLB wishing to specialise in Women and children's wellbeing and rights, 

  • LLB. with special interest in Politics and refugee law.

  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science, Master of Arts Degree, majoring in Development Studies,

  • BSc in ecology and conservation,

  • Diploma of Teaching in Early Childhood Education,

  • A new immigrant Doctor of Medicine upgrading by completing a bridging programme to obtain a New Zealand Medical degree.

  • Bachelor of Nursing degree,

  • Dentistry Degree BDS extending to further study to obtain a co-joint Degree: Master of Dental Surgery  in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, BA of Medicine and Surgery( the first woman to be accepted into this course.)

  • Diploma in Sign Language

  • Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Human Resources

  • Bachelor of Building Sciences and Architecture
